Frock O'Clock

Hello blog! I haven't forgotten about you!

This is the dress that I made to wear on my birthday. Birthday dress fabric has to pass some rigorous criteria, and my 21st birthday was no exception.

2014 Birthday Dress Criteria:
1. Match my pink hair.
2. Be sparkly.
3. No black.

After two trips to two different fabric stores, I found this fabric at JoAnns. (It has silvery thread woven through it.) I'm also really pleased with the fit; the skirt is a self drafted pattern, and I modified the bodice of Simplicity 1873 to fit me better. I last used the pattern a few years ago, and remembered how the neckline gapped and how it was too tight at the waist. I LOATHE making muslins, so I trusted my "sewer's intuition" and a few measurements, re-drafted the pattern, and didn't look back. Fortunately, it turned out perfectly!

And it has pockets! I really like this author's argument about how the fashion industry is holding women back by not including functional pockets in most garments.

Happy New Year, folks! I'm not one to make resolutions, but I do hope to be blogging a bit more moving forward :)
