Under the Sea

Halloween costume! If I had more time, I would have made some sort of cool top instead of resorting to the purple tshirt. But the tail was really cool because the fabric was already all scaly and I didn't have to do anything to it.  And, to clear up any misconceptions, the hair is natural.

For fun! Photoshop instead of homework...

Homecoming was last night! The dress that I made was a lot of my own design, but I did base it off the Simplicity pattern 4070. My inspiration came from this dress that Emma Watson wore to a Harry Potter premiere (Rafael Lopez, I believe)
And the Stella McCartney F/W 2011 show...

I ordered the feathers from Mood in New York City--like on Project Runway! The polka dot tulle was some vintage stuff that I found on Etsy.
I really like how it turned out! And I was Homecoming queen, so it went nicely with the crown ;)

jeans, Jeans, JEANS!

Oh hey cool jeans, neat color...what? They cost $158??? Looks like I'll be making my own...
James Jeans, $158 @ Piperlime                                   Gap Corduroy leggings, $60

Totally loved this color, but the only way to get it without spending alot of money was to dye my own!
First, went to Kohls, where I picked up some $12.99 grey clearance jeans!
Then, I went to JoAnns, where I picked up RIT dye in three colors, and color remover.  The color remover did not work very well, as you can tell in the picture below...
Still gray...
So we went to bleach!
I used an entire package of the orange, half brown, and about a quarter of the red.
We have one of those new washers that you can't do the machine dye in, so we mixed it in the laundry tub.
And, after about an hour maybe we wrung and washed them. (I was getting impatient.)
Ta dah!

Back to School

This week was the first week of school, la rentree!
I made a new lunchbag:

I have been waiting to use this fabric from Ikea forever! It reminds me of the Lonely Goatherd song from my favorite movie, the Sound of Music.  The bag is a little big, but I wanted to get the two goats on the front!

And I made a new school bag!
It's just a messenger bag, similar to the ones I made a while ago for some friends, that I put a twist lock on and different handles.  The twistlock stitching is a little rough, but I still love it.
I especially like the top handle!
I just died a pair of jeans, so I'll have those up shortly!

These are Chocolate Graham Cracker Cupcakes with Marshmallow Butter frosting from this recipe. I would suggest making more of the graham cracker crumb mixture than the recipe says, so that there's extra to sprinkle on top! Also, the cake batter was really soupy--either I didn't put the right amount of flour in, or I put too much boiling water...
As you can tell, I just really like taking pictures of cupcakes. I made these to take to a welcoming party for a foreign exchange student that a friend is hosting for the school year.

First, some swim-spiration!
This style swimsuit, but with a Missoni flair!
Found from various websites and such...forgot to cite. I think we'll be okay.

Yay! So excited with how this came out! Even better was that the pattern fit adjustments. I used McCall's 5400. I got the fabric off Ebay, but Spandex World is pretty much the place to go for the swimsuit fabric like this.
Also, on the top, I put boning into the side seams to give it a little more structure. It was pretty easy; I just made a casing out of the lining seam and made sure to cut the boning shorter than necessary for the seam allowances and whatnot.
Perhaps you are also wondering why I have very low quality pictures of my new swimsuit sans moi. This is due to the fact that I had to send my lovely new Nikon camera in for repair because I spilled watermelon jui--I mean, the lens cover is not working and am now using my old crummy camera.

It's a Murder Mystery, Old Sport

Here's the pictures from the 1920s murder mystery party that our friends were putting on! It was the berries! I did very extensive research for my role as Rose Royce, a journalist for the New York Times. Looked up twenties slang, politics, pop culture, learned the Charleston on YouTube, reread the Great Gatsby...

Some flapper inspiration.

This dress was all my design! I'm so glad that it turned out like it did! The fabric is crepe-back satin.

Harry Potter

First up, my Fleur costume for the Harry Potter premier!

Oh! Look at me I look just like Clemence Poesy! Just kidding, those are my comparison pictures. Below are my costume pics:

The dress is a modified version of Simplicity 2246, and the capelet is kind of like the circle skirt that I made (look at me, I'm so cool I can link within my own blog), except that it is a half circle and a lined it with dark blue. The collar was my own design! The hat is a beret, because, umm, that hat from the movie wasn't going to happen. I got the beret pattern out of a book called "Simple Sewing with a French Twist."

The picture on top is me and my best friend, who sadly, was not as enthused about Harry Potter as I was. Then again, I was very enthused. Five people whom I did not know asked to take a picture with me!

The wand is the last picture. I cut it to exactly "nine and a half inches" just like J.K. Rowling specified! Ummm...probably shouldn't admit that in public...
